The SealSkinz Waterproof Bush Hat has a wide brim which together a special breathable membrane and a mesh lining make the hat waterproof, windproof and breathable.
The special membrane is made from Porelle which is laminated between the inner and outer material & is both waterproof and breathable. A totally waterproof but non-breathable hat would be uncomfortable to wear, as perspiration would have no means of escaping, thus condensing on the inside of the hat, leaving the head feeling cold.
Why is this membrane important? Most heat loss from the head is by conduction. This occurs when there is a temperature difference between the head (the heat source) & the external colder environment. Heat loss is slowed by the hats material. Air is a poor conductor of heat, and consequently an efficient insulator. Water conducts heat 24 times more effectively than air, and is therefore a poor insulator.
As SealSkinz products are waterproof and breathable, so the spaces in the fabric are filled with air, not water; therefore the Bush Hat slows heat loss much more effectively and your head stay warm & dry.
As with all Sealskinz products the Bush Hat can be machine washed (40°C max). The best way to dry it, is to turn the hat inside out and dry it in the airing cupboard or drip dry overnight.
