The Myler MB04 Low Port Mouthpiece with Copper Inlay and Independent Side Movement.
Stainless Steel 7" Regular Western Flat Shank
zes or rusts. Harmless to horses, it has a sweet taste and promotes salivation.
The flat shank is a length of metal with two rings and fixed mouthpiece attachment. The top ring is for the headstall and curb strap attachment; the bottom ring for the reins.
The length of metal below the mouthpiece is flat and bent at a slight angel towards the rider's hands. The top, or purchase, is angled away from the horse and the ring is squared.
Shanks are used for leverage and typically used with a curb strap or chain. Depending on the mouthpiece, backward and upward pressure on the reins transfers into downward pressure on the tongue, bars and poll, pressure on the curb, and forward and downward pressure on the palate. The tops, or purchases are bent away from the horse to prevent discomfort or rubbing.
Rider with overactive hands should be cautious of using long shanks.
