Riding Injuries - The Facts

We have always believed that when you purchase something, it is a two stage process.

  • Set the specification you require and the service you would like from the supplier
  • Its then a question of getting the best price for that specification

Sometimes its easy to let the second item rule everything.  You cannot do that with protective equipment, particularly body protectors.  You have one body and its essential you make a measured choice.

To assist you, these statistics have been amassed to make you aware of the risks and to enable you to make a balanced judgement based on knowledge

  • Most commonly injured group - young leisure riding female amateur riders
  • Vast majority (approx 70%) of accidents occur out hacking and schooling - not in the competition ring
  • A Cambridge University study of 1000 riding accident hospital admissions has shown; one injury for 100 hours leisure riding
  • Approximately 15% of horse riding injuries require hospital admission and the severity of injury tends to be high
  • 54% injured patients have chest trauma
  • Rib fractures are common and painful with a quarter of cases having an associated underlying injury
  • 80-90% of spinal fractures are to the lumbar and thoracic spine, not the neck
  • Abdominal trauma occurs in approx 22% seriously injured patients.  The liver spleen and kidneys are the most commonley injured abdominal organs.
