The hat is made waterproof and windproof by using a Porelle membrane which is very durable. Others use a coating, but coatings can be more easily damaged during repeated washing and flexing during wear.
As with all Sealskinz products the SealSkinz Waterproof Beanie Hat can be machine washed.
